I have always thought that “the classics” should be taught in schools everywhere, and actually thought that this was being accomplished….maybe not in the public school, but certainly in the home schools and private schools. I didn’t see what the “back to classics” people were all about.
Especially as a teacher I felt it necessary to give a broad view of ALL literature, and thought that my treatment of ancient history/literature was more than adequate. This year, however, I have been using a different program, and have been really immersed in the study of ancient books. I only have so much time in each day, but the study is pulling me into it willy-nilly.
I am learning all sorts of things about these ancient peoples — things that make such a difference in how I view their cultures, our culture, and especially the worship of the only true God. If you want to be strengthened in your faith, I recommend this sort of study for you AND your kids. There’s nothing like seeing the ancient gods [the forerunners of today’s false gods] in all their ugliness and sin to cause you to bless the True God for His mercy and grace toward His people.
Also in these studies, your kids get a leg up on all of the philosophies that they will ever meet. One of my favorite sayings to my students [for years!] has been that of “the Preacher” — “….there is nothing new under the sun.” Eccl. 1:9
