SERVICES FOR ALL HOME EDUCATORS

INFORMATION:  GRHE provides new and potential home educators with applications to the Home Education Association of Virginia (HEAV) and the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).  We can also provide information on dealing with local school districts.

MONTHLY ACTIVITIES: We schedule many special events throughout the year.  These events may feature a special speaker, may involve entire families or only moms, be a simple support meeting, or be a major educational event like the Science Fair.  We try to make each event well worth your time.  We also sponsor a quarterly Encouragement Meeting.  It is an informal gathering where folks can ask questions, share ideas, and fellowship with other parents.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:  GRHE will maintain a calendar of the many events and activities available throughout the year.  Non-members will have access to a skeleton calendar of events planned a year ahead of time by the Board of Directors.  Other events are normally spontaneously planned by members and friends of GRHE and only coordinated through GRHE to avoid conflicts in scheduling.  Anyone who would like to coordinate a field trip or activity is encouraged to do so.       The GRHE e-mail message line, website and newsletter are available as tools to publicize these events.  Only members will have access to the e-mail message line and newsletter.  However, any home schooler is welcome to attend our events.

FOR CHILDREN:  There are a number of activities that provide educational enrichment and socialization opportunities for children.  These include choirs, band, science fair, ice and roller skating, park days and field trips.  The P.O.N.Y. Express is a student newspaper designed and written by local home schooled youth.  Non-GRHE members normally have to pay more for activities that require a fee.  Some of these are GRHE sponsored and some are not.

FOR MOMS ONLY:   To support and encourage mothers, we offer a fall overnight retreat and a spring or summer brunch with a special speaker. 

SERVICES FOR GRHE MEMBERS ONLY

LIBRARY ACCESS:  GRHE maintains a library for the benefit of members.   It houses a growing collection of over 2,500 books, tapes, videos, educational games, and science equipment (including a microscope) of interest to home educators.

NEWSLETTER:  GRHE publishes a bimonthly newsletter, Home Educator’s Journal.  Included in the newsletter are a calendar of upcoming events, articles of interest to home educators and other articles written by members of GRHE.  It is published in the odd months.

CALENDAR:  GRHE maintains a weekly calendar of events for fast, short notice communication of upcoming events directly to your e-mail address.

INTERNET:  A members-only section is being created by GRHE which will provide members with the newsletter, updated messages, current calendar,  reminders of upcoming events and other profitable information. This will make it easy for members to keep up with what is going on.

MEMBER DIRECTORY:  Each August, a directory containing the names, addresses, phone numbers and names and ages of children of participating families is published.  Inclusion in the directory is optional, but all members receive a copy.  Cost is included in your membership.

HSLDA DISCOUNT:  If you are a member of GRHE, Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) will give you a 15% discount off their annual fee, making your cost $85 instead of $100.  This discount does not apply if you use their special payment schedule.  You only receive the discount if you make full payment with your registration.  You will receive our discount group number when you join which is required for the discount.

GRHE DISCOUNTS:  Members are offered discount prices on all GRHE sponsored events such as skating, conferences or seminars, book sales, science fair, and much more.

BUSINESS DISCOUNTS:  Some businesses offer our members discounts on purchases.  Most of these will require you to show your membership card to receive the discount.  Also, ask for a discount at any business that offers teacher or educational discounts.
